Hafız Hakkı was born in 1879 in Monastir. After studying at the military high school in his home town, he went to Istanbul and graduated from the War Academy in 1902. He served in Monastir and Salonica, where he had remarkable achievements in the pursuit of Bulgarian bands.
After he became a Major in 1908, he first served at the High Command in Istanbul and later he was appointed as the military attaché in Vienna. He did not stay in Austria for a long time and he returned to Istanbul to join the “Liberation Army”, which suppressed the counter-revolutionary rebellion in April 1909. He continued working at the High Command and during the Balkan War, he took part in the defence of Edirne.
When the World War broke out, he was promoted to Major and he became the commander of the X Corps in the Caucasian front. After the campaign in Sarıkamış, he was made a General and assigned to the command of the Third Army in January 1915. Soon afterwards he contracted typhus and died in Erzurum on 15 February 1915. |
