Record: - Launched on 30 June 1891. - Commissioned by the German Navy on 24 April 1894, named as Kurfürst Friedrich Wilhelm. - Sold to the Turkish Navy in August 1910 and renamed as Barbaros Hayreddin. - Took part in the Balkan War. - On 18 February 1915, Barbaros Hayreddin anchored off the coast in the Dardanelles to be used as a floating battery. - On 11 March 1915, Barbaros Hayreddin returned to Istanbul. - On 25 April 1915, Barbaros Hayreddin shelled the British landings in Gallipoli. - On 8 August 1915, while off Bolayır north of the Gallipoli peninsula, Barbaros Hayreddin was torpedoed by the British submarine E11. 21 officers and 237 sailors lost their lives. 51 officers and 347 sailors are rescued by Sivrihisar and Basra. |
